A tooth can be thought of as having two parts:
- the crown which the part of the tooth that is visible, and
- the root which is beneath the gum line and thus not visible.
Dental care for the crown part of the tooth is commonly called dentistry.
Dental care for the root part of the tooth is commonly called a dental implant.
When people talk of “losing a tooth”, they are usually referring to the crown, the visible part of the tooth. When this happens, you have a number of options:
- removable partial dentures
- implants – Dental implants are fixtures of titanium which are surgically screwed into your jaw bone. The implant is an anchor for a naturally-appearing false tooth or a set of false teeth.
Dentistry has come a long way from the days when my Dad was the dentist, and his tools were a piece of string (not sterilized) and a door knob. And if you are too young to know what I’m talking about, the way it worked was, Dad would tie the string around my tooth, the other end of the string on the door knob. Then, before I could think too much about it, he’s slam the door and ‘viola’, my tooth would be out, hanging on the string from the door knob.
I don’t recommend that method!
